From Human to Machine
AI and Its Role in the Creative Process
This master’s thesis explores the narrative and aesthetic potential of generative artificial intelligence in experimental filmmaking. Developed through artistic research, the project investigates how AI-generated images and videos can be used to construct a cinematic self-portrait that reflects on identity, memory, entrapment, and new ways of seeing.
Combining theoretical research with practical experimentation, the work brings together media theory, generative image-making, experimental film, and audiovisual storytelling. The practical outcome is an experimental short film that merges everyday images of the filmmaker’s body and face with surreal sequences, constructed camera movements, animation, editing, and sound design.
At the center of the project lies the tension between lived human experience and algorithmically generated imagery. By working with repetition, glitch, visual incongruity, and fragmentation, the film explores the unstable space between documentary trace and machinic simulation, while questioning authorship, embodiment, and the shifting relationship between artist, image, and machine.
